First of all read the following news, to familiarise yourselves:

And to fill you in even further, I heard today that Albania officially has declared (through its foreign minister) that it is considering the 5 Chinese as political asylum seekers and is duly processing their applications. Now, you might wonder about the title which I put for this thread.
According to an analysis by an Albanian online paper, the connection between the 5 Chinese and the Kosovo status solution starts back in 1999 when Jugoslavia was being bombarded by NATO. You remember when NATO "accidentally" bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade? After that China declared that it would veto the bombing of Serbia in the UN Security Council. However, Clinton (who was waiting for such a statement) justified before the international community not to envoke the bombing issue in the Security Council.
2 months later, in June 1999, Marti Ahtisari in an effort to convince Milosevic to withdraw from Kosovo, presented him with a Plan containing 10 points; a plan which was appladed by the Jugoslav parliament (the first time a capitulation is appladed!). However, what was not made public back then was that Milosevic was promised that Kosovo Serbs would keep Northern Kosovo.
Now how does this all come together? Well it looks like Kosovo independence WILL be approved by the Security Council of the UN. However, also Ahtisari's plan on splitting Kosovo looks like will become a reality (it was noticable the lack of euphoria in the Kosovo Albanian delegation after the last Vienna meeting). So, Diplomacy kicks in and here's where the 5 Chinese come in. According to this diplomatic move, China (supposingly upset why USA sent the 5 Chinese disidnets to Albania, will vote against Kosovo's independence in the Council, thus avenging the bombing of its embassy in Belgrade. This way, the USA (who will vote FOR Kosovo's independence) will come across as in favour of the Kosovars (traditional allies of the US) while also satisfying the Serb community in Ohio who gave Bush his win 2 years ago, by voting for a Kosovo without its northern part.
