The two main highways being constructed now are the durres-kukes-morine highway to connect the port of durres with kosova and the rest of central balkans. the next is corridor 8 which aims to connect the ports of durres and vlora with eastern albania and the black sea. the next, although not top priority, is the adriatic-ionian highway. this highway is part of the north-south corridor of albania.

some sections are well into their construction phase while as others are past their aprooval and finaning phase but real construction work has not begun on yet.

it is not being talked about so much in albania right now (although it is still a priority for the government). after the construction of corridor 8 and durres-kukes-morine highway there will be sections that will already exist and be used by the adriatic-ionian highway. these sections (in green) start from Kruja and end in Vlore. the rest (in blue) will be built for adriatic-ionian highway. i also put two pics of the section in green to get an idea of what it looks like so far. i also put another pic for you to see what the expressway tirane-shkoder looks like now. note: the ring road for shkoder has been planned of for a while and it will be part of adriatic-ionian highway.

this is an expressway not a highway with one lane in each direction.

The project is intended to bring a solution to the north east isolation problem. This will be the 3d major investment in northern Albania since 1990 after the Kukes Airport and Durres-Morine HW.

The road will be 150km long with an average track speed of 80km/h.

Road trace:

Shëngjin Port - Vau Dejës - Koman - Tetaj - Dushaj - Tropojë (Qafë Morinë)

The road can be used all year long because of the low elevation ASL, which will prevent snow accumulation.

greek deputy foreing mininster cited a new motorway to be built in south albania to link it with greece.


HiPERB-backed project concerning the construction of the 41km-long Sagiades-Konispol-Sarande motorway along the two countries' Ionian coast, a project expected to link extreme northwestern Greece with Albania's southwest quadrant, an area that hosts that country's ethnic Greek minority. The overall cost of the project is 33.5 million euros, of which 25 million euros will be allocated from the Greek state budget.

the average length of each road is about 10 km so in all 470 km of new roads will be built. these are secondary roads and are not top priority however it will increase efficency in the local town markets.

S.A.C & Wall Street and Trade for AID international will finance Tirane-Elbasan Highway

According to the newspaper “Rilindja Demokratike” S.A.C & Wall Street and Trade for AID international will finance a 40 million euro project for the construction of Tirane-Elbasan highway. The president of the American company S.A.C & Wall Street, Steven Cole declared yesterday to the press that the main reason why they decided to invest was the internationally improved image of Albania and the dynamic development of its infrastructure.

Steven Cole said that the improvement in the rule of law has been successful by the current government and that his organization looks forward to take part in the development of Albanian infrastructure and also on the implementation of other projects in infrastructure that connect Albania with Kosovo.
