Album: Reflections by Manos Hatzidakis and the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble.

The words of a prophet in 1969 performed in New York. Unfortunately this is a remake by Raining Pleasure, and the story is almost half...

KEMAL

This is the story of foolish Prince Bass Fiddle and wise Jerry Kemal
As you remember, last time, the Prince was found without a dime on the Ponce Valdez while Jerry watched him from a tree….

In the land of Ali Baba near the sea of Babalee
Leaved a man who played the zither with a pronoun on his knee
He would dance among the fuzzy trees and bring the birds to life
And his name was Prince Bass Fiddle and he love his ugly wife
He would sing the songs of Lutvee in his very special way
And he puffed tea with his lumpy head and sleep all night and day
With his turban and his Leicester faced the thieves of Germany
But beware great Prince Bass Fiddle, you’ll be hanging from a tree

Fifty days and nights they waited for a sing from old Ratan
To pretend to wear the colours of the Emperor Charlie Chan
So they strolled in to the forest with a song and energy
To find bay leaves in the cauldron of the mad witch Betty Lee
Came the answer from a leaf top that was found upon the ground
Only time and Prince Bass Fiddle will repair your bellies round
Search highlands search the lowlands, cruise the Sea of Babalee
But remember that your children need the food from filigree

Then one day in Abalolone came a messenger to say
That onion-head Bass Fiddle broke in half no more to play
Will we lose our land of Lutvee to the bearded men of Cleaves ?
Only miracles can save us and some tricks inside our sleeves
From the sky there was an answer to the question of the plebes
You will meet a tall dark stranger wearing black and blue cannives
Who is Lucy, who is Nestor ? We should only be there now
Why it’s Aphrodite Milton and his keeper Prince Kemal

Goodnight Kemal . This World will never change ….Goodnight.

Found the original in Greek, lyrics by Nikos Gkatsos and translated it, this is very interesting:

Listen to the story of Kemal a young prince of the East...
descendant of Sevah the sailor, who thought that he could change the world.....but bitter the will of Allah and dark the soul of man.

In the Anatolian places
once upon a time
the pot was empty
the water was dirty

In Mosul and Vassora
in the old fig plant
sad cry now, the children of the desert

And a young one from a clan
from royal the blood,
defies the mourning
and marches for a new start

The Bedhouins look at him
with eyes full of sadness
and vow to Allah he gives
that times will change

Once the rulers heard,
the mans courage
they begin with a wolfs tooth
and a lions dress

From Tigres to Euphrates
from the earth to the sky
they hunt the apostate
to catch him alive

On him falls the crowd
like hungry dogs
and they take him to the caliph
to put him the knot(hanging)

Black honey, black milk
he had that morning
before he leaves to the hang
his last breath

With two old camels
and a red light
into paradises gates
the prophet is awaiting

Now they go hand in hand
and its cloudy all around
but the star of Damaskus
is keeping them company

In a month, in a year
they see Allah
who from his throne
says to the naive Sevah:

Beaten prodigy
times dont change
with fire and sword
always the world moves on

Goodnight Kemal, this world will never change

Goodnight.

In 1966 the world famous Hatzidakis went to New York to put up a play in Broadway with Dashen and Merkuri, there he mingled with the local Rock/Pop scene and created the album Reflections with the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble.

The song Kemal is dedicated to a young Arab he met in new York who went by the name Kemal, and to Hatzidakis Kemals story is a universal story that needed to be told.
