Its actually EEC which stands for European Economic Community which Turkey applied for associate member status in 1959 but in 1960 the Turkish military staged a coup which meant that the Ankara Association Agreement ended up only being signed in 1963.

yes,i agree, the concept remains the same in any case. Presentation of a candidacy status does not mean acceptance of the application anyway.

Macedonia, Montenegro vow to boost economic cooperation
Economic cooperation and key regional issues were the main themes of today's meeting of Macedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Miloshoski and the visiting Montenegrin Foreign Minister Milan Roken.
"The main focus was put on enhancing the bilateral co-operation in fields spanning economy and tourism," Miloshoski said.
Miloshoski and Roken signed a Protocol on Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Macedonia and Montenegro.
The two countries will also sign an agreement on cooperation in the process of integration into the Euro-Atlantic community, Miloshoski said.
Roken voiced hope for closer co-operation with the Adriatic Charter members - Macedonia, Albania and Croatia.
"Our ambition is to become a member of the Adriatic Group as soon as possible," Roken said. He underscored the idea of reviving the trilateral meetings of prime ministers of Albania, Montenegro and Macedonia.
The two countries came up with common stands but with individual specifics regarding the Kosovo issue.
"The Kosovo issue should be wrapped up in due time in a way to entrench stability in the region and encourage Euro-Atlantic perspectives of all countries lagging behind one step or two," Miloshoski said.
Montenegrin foreign minister said the new Kosovo status talks mediated by Contact Group would lead to stabilization of the process.

Montenegro gets boost for EU bid
Last Updated: Monday, 15 October 2007, 17:56 GMT 18:56 UK
Montenegro and the European Union have signed a key agreement that is the first step towards EU membership for the former Yugoslav state.
The Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) opens up trade between the EU and Montenegro, which broke away from Serbia in May 2006.
EU-Montenegro talks picked up speed after the union with Serbia ended.
Montenegro - which has just 650,000 inhabitants - has to fulfil various reforms before entering the EU.
Significant judicial and constitutional reforms are required in the tiny country, which is plagued by corruption. It is not yet officially a candidate for EU membership.
The SAA with Montenegro had almost been scuppered by a dispute with Bulgaria, which had insisted that the Cyrillic spelling of "euro" be included in the text.
Bulgaria later backed down after EU envoys pledged to address the spelling issue.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, quoted by Reuters news agency, voiced hope that the SAA with Montenegro would "serve as an inspiration for the other countries of the region too".

Bulgarians are just realistic , if there is a budget of lets say 10 billion euros for agriculture it is better to divide it by 10 rather than by 11 .
Also it is better to keep your real GNP down because the poorest regions take more money. In conclusion , when you read about the Belgian the Greek and the British economic figures don't believe anything .

Forget this EU crap!!!!!!!
The politicians in the countries such as mine are only using the EU membership slow advances to get some votes and support.
Even if we get into EU tomorrow, the problems will not get fixed because of EU overnight.
Our problems will only get resolved by us, ourselves. Numerous times we have discussed how with few reforms the economy of Albania can achieve great standards. That's what we need to do and admission in EU is just the cherry on top.

agreed. i would not mind albania entering first as a privalged member able to have a voice on the policy making, becasue it's not fair that we dont have a voice, albeit small, on policies that affect us so much. after we've reached EU standards then full membership.

Montenegro submitted application for membership in EU
Podgorica /15/12/ 12:44
Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic submitted officially today the country's application for receiving a status of candidate for membership in the European Union.
Djukanovic handed over the application to the French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country is presiding over the EU. The meeting is taking place in the Elysee Palace, with attendance of the EU Enlargement Commissioner Ollie Rehn.
The Government of Montenegro adopted the decision for candidacy status application last Thursday.
Except for the Montenegro's Prime Minister, the document containing 15 pages is signed by the President Filip Vujanovic and the Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic.

So much about being too early. :common051
In any case, it will be interesting if the Committee supports this on the Council of Europe's question, becuase in the past few weeks, the European Union has done nothing but criticizing Montenegro's legal system, reforms and civil liberties, and there is also the fact that according to EuroStat's most recent report, Montenegro is one of the poorest countries in Europe (although that has got nothing to do with European Integrations).

In three months from now, the European Union shall investigate to see whether Montenegro is worthy to become a Candidate for the EU.
France and Czechia have so far declared immediate support of MNE achieving candidate status, while the Montenegrin Foreign Minister has stated that MNE could freely expect Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovenia to support at once. What worries, is Italy's attitude.

As many as 15 percent of the citizens are against EU entry, as they see no reason for joining the Union.

I wonder why.
Probably because of this:
There are numerous open questions, aside from a very high quantity of corruption in the state, which worry international watcher organizations and which present the central critic of the Montenegrin opposition, opening a question about the freedom of elections in Montenegro and its democracy, especially pointing out the authoritarian influence of its long-term Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic. According to the last report, for 2008, Montenegro is among the mst corrupt nations on earth and with one of the most endangered national integrities.

The Council of Ministers of the European Union has reached a consensus - there will be no discussion on the Montenegrin Candidacy request until 2010.
By the end of 2009 more than 4,000 questions will be sent to Podgorica, awaiting answer (European pre-candidacy poll).
Montenegro had filed for candidacy in 2008. And to remember the posts "congratulations to Montenegro" from back then...
