Jules Dassin died today, at the age of 97.

An american cinema director of russian-jewish roots , husband of Melina Merkouri, who became a greek and fought against the dictatorship.

A couple o films we owe to him :
"Never on Sundays"
"Rififi"

2 films that in the early 60ties turned Athens and Istanbul in international turist attractions.

That is most unfortunate. Everybody liked the guy (except the junta sympathisers ofc). I did not like his movies much, but i admired his culture, knowledge, personality, and ofc his battle against the colonnels (even if i am sure Melina had played a major role in this).

RIP.

That is irrelevant. I am only saddened that a non greek who was more greek than many of the ''original'' ones has died.

I made a mistake. The film about Istanbul was "Topcapi", 1n 1964.
