We are hosting one of the greatest International World Class Events in Europe!!!:trampolin:trampolin:worthy::vi ctory:

To organize the event, Romania ran with a stadium which is still being constructed, and won against countries with a long tradition in the field, such as Great Britain (Emirates), Germany (AufSchalke), Spain (Montjuic) and Ireland (Lansdowne Road).

Bucharest will host the 2012 UEFA Europe League final, under a unanimous decision by UEFA’s executive committee on Thursday in Nyon. The game will be held on the National Arena, which is currently in its early construction stage.

The head of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), Mircea Sandu, a member of UEFA’s executive committee, said this decision is an important moment for the federation and the history of Romanian football.

“Our efforts were finally successful but it is obvious to everybody and first of all to us that we have to carry out this task, which is both difficult and a real honor. We are aware of what this implies and I am confident that, with the help of the Bucharest City Hall and the government, along with the other institutions involved, we will be able to complete the construction on time and live up to the standards required by such an event. This will be an event that will have a significant impact on our image and our financial situation,” Sandu was quoted as saying on FRF’s website.

The race for the organization of a UEFA Cup final in 2011 and 2012 included: England (Emirates), Germany (AufSchalke), Spain (Montjuic), Ireland (Lansdowne Road) and Romania (Lia Manoliu). England staged the UEFA Cup final in 2008, Germany will hold the final in 2012 and Spain will host next year’s Champions League final. Ireland was chosen to stage the Europe League final in 2011 and Romania, in 2012.

In its Thursday session, UEFA’s executive committee also decided that London’s Wembley Stadium will host the Champions League in 2011 and Fussball Arena will hold the final of the competition in 2012.

National Arena (the former Lia Manoliu stadium) is currently being rebuilt and works are scheduled to be completed in October-November 2012. The project consists of an almost complete reconstruction of the stadium as a covered arena with 55,000 seats, arranging special areas for athletes, officials, members of the public. The construction contract is worth about 119.77 million Euro..

National Arena – the first Romanian stadium to host a European cup final

Former stadium Lia Manoliu, renamed National Arena, will be the first stadium in Romania to host a European cup final, following the UEFA executive committee’s decision on Thursday to entrust Bucharest with organizing the 2012 UEFA Cup final.

Romania won the right to stage this final with a stadium which is currently in its first stage of construction, but whose entire reconstruction project is worth no less than 120 million euros. The future National Arena will be ranked as a first category stadium and will have 55,000 seats. The works should be finalized in 2010. The stadium will spread on 108,000 square meters and will consist of six levels, including two underground. It will also have 40 VIP lodges with bars and restaurants.

UEFA president Michel Platini himself visited Romania in November 2008 to check on the stage of the works. At the end of the visit and after receiving President Traian Basescu’s guarantee that Romanian authorities will do anything possible to complete the construction on time, Platini said he would support Romania’s candidacy to organize the UEFA Cup, the future Europe League, in 2012.

The National stadium within the Lia Manoliu complex was built in 1953 and was named 23 August until 1990. After 2000, it was decided to restore the grass of the stadium, but the famous match lost against Denmark in 2003 changed the place’s history. After the 2-5 loss and the decision to replace grass with sand, it was decided that the dtadium would be brought down.

The last match held in the old arena was Romania-Albania, 6-1, in the preliminaries of t he 2008 European Championship.

We have bided with Bulgaria to host the Euro 2020 Championships hopefully we will get it. But also Hungary may also invite us to co host it with them for the Euro 2016 or Euro 2020, if that was to happen we would not be able to host the Euro 2020 with Bulgaria.

Oh, believe me, they can :)

BHF, first of all congrats to Romania. It's a real beautiful thing to organize such a big event, but as far as I understood it was more a political choice than a strictly sportive one. They chose Romania not because of the stadium (so, it's not worthy to compare AufSchalke etc. with a stadium which has not started to be built yet), but more of the political contacts of your prime minister with Platini.

Anyway, I am really happy for this choice and hope to be there to watch the Europe League final. Maybe Steaua will play it ;)
