ok i saw the plan for scanderbeg square. it's good. the problem is that it's too good so i dont really think that it will ever happen (at least not for the next 30 years) ;)

all those things look great but i doubt they will ever make them

no the project was won by a french firm. a dutch firm won one part which was to build a new 85 meter structure. and you're pretty much wrong. Skanderbeg square will look like that in a decade. construction has begun on it since last year. it's not a plan being reviewed but it's a plan under construction.

those vase things are not actually being built. they're just there to represent a building which will be chosen later. there are about 20 of them in all to be built. 10 by the new train station and another 10 for sknderbeg square. they're all 85 meters in height. about 25 floors. each structure is choosen in a competition. 3 of them have been choosen already and 2 have started construction. one more will be choosen soon and the rest will follow. it takes about 2 years to build one. they'r not being built one by one so don't worry. thats the first phase of the masterplan. the second pahse will be chosen soon. there seems to be an anticipation of a skyscraper district. one of our local investors is a little dissapointed the fhirst part didn't allow him to build his 65 floor building he wanted to build in 2003.

A friend of mine asked me where did the name Tirana come from? I couldn't answer :D but i told him that it had nothing to do with the word "tyran" :D ... I guess that i'm right about this second point, but i still don't know where does the name Tirana come from? Anybody can answer me? :">

I have read somewhere that it comes from the greek word ''Theranda'' which is a loan from the illyrian one "te ranat",because of the morphology of the terrain of the surrounding areas.

But i believe this is only one of the theories,im sure Albanians here know of different ones.:?

The three hypothesis for the origins of Tirana's name:

1- “Tirana “, it is thought that comes from the word “ Theranda”, mentioned in the ancient Greek and Latin sources, that aborigines called Te Ranat, because the field was formed as a result of stiff materials that the waters from the surrounding mountains brought. (In today's Albanian Të Ranat (Gegh dialect) means exactly that: "fallen --> in plural)

2- “Tirana“ comes from “Tirkan“. Tirkan was a castle in Dajti‘s mountainside. Even nowadays, there exist the ruins of this ancient castle that dates with the beginning of the I-century B.C. This is thought to have been the castle that the Byzantium historian Prokop (VI-century) called the Castle of Tirkan.

3- “Tirana“ comes from old Greek, “Tyros” which means dairy. It is thought that this variant remained, because in the field of Tirana, the shepherds of the nearby areas used to trade dairy products.


For the first time Tirana’s name in the nowadays form was mentioned in 1418 in a Venetian document.

If you got to www.maps.google.com and do a search for Tirana you'll get a map. Click on Satellite and you can get a perfect picture of Tirana (although from what I can judge it's about 1.5 - 2 years old). Pretty cool! I managed to find my appartment block!
