A National Geographic survey has recently caused consternation among those who have a real interest in the education of the youth of the United States. That survey, which was a test of the geographic knowledge of youth of many nations. The young people of this country displayed an abysmal ignorance of the most basic facts of world geography and even of the geography of their own nation.
According to the survey, only one out of seven Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 could find Iraq or Iran on a world map. Despite so much comment in the news lately about Afghanistan only 58 percent were aware of that nation and ONLY 17 percent could find it on the map!
Displaying even greater ignorance, when asked to find ten U.S. states on the map, only 89 percent could find Texas and California and only 51 percent could locate New York. When asked to locate sixteen countries on a world map, these geographic ‘wide-awakes’ could only find seven of the sixteen. Twenty nine percent couldn’t find the diminutive PACIFIC OCEAN! Eleven percent couldn’t even find their own country, the UNITED STATES on the world map!

if you know any examples of american ignorance, feel free to post them here.
"Eleven percent couldn’t even find their own country, the UNITED STATES on the world map!"

WASHINGTON -- Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of the damage
from Hurricane Katrina, nearly one-third of young Americans
recently polled couldn't locate Louisiana on a map and 48 percent
were unable to identify Mississippi.
Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 fared even worse with
foreign locations: 6 in 10 couldn't find Iraq, according to a
Roper poll conducted for National Geographic.
National Geographic president John Fahey announced a program to
help remedy the problem.
It's hoping to enlist businesses, nonprofit groups and educators
in a bid to improve geographic literacy. [...]
How do you expect them to locate where Afghanistan is on the map (and other countries for that matter)
when they are unable to locate several of their states firstly??:trampolin

I think race has been a burden for black Americans. Being Muslim has also been a challenge because so many people do not understand Islam. - Kareem Abdul Jabar.
Hehe, here is something more from the great George Bush:
"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." - Washington, D.C., August 5, 2004
"Secondly, the tactics of our—as you know, we don't have relationships with Iran. I mean, that's—ever since the late '70s, we have no contacts with them, and we've totally sanctioned them. In other words, there's no sanctions—you can't—we're out of sanctions."- Annandale, Va., Aug. 9, 2004
"I mean, if you've ever been a governor of a state, you understand the vast potential of broadband technology, you understand how hard it is to make sure that physics, for example, is taught in every classroom in the state. It's difficult to do. It's, like, cost-prohibitive."- Washington, D.C., June 24, 2004
"I want to thank my friend, Sen. Bill Frist, for joining us today. … He married a Texas girl, I want you to know. (Laughter.) Karyn is with us. A West Texas girl, just like me."- Nashville, Tenn., May 27, 2004
"I'm honored to shake the hand of a brave Iraqi citizen who had his hand cut off by Saddam Hussein."- Washington, D.C., May 25, 2004
"More Muslims have died at the hands of killers than - I say more Muslims - a lot of Muslims have died - I don't know the exact count - at Istanbul. Look at these different places around the world where there's been tremendous death and destruction because killers kill."- Washington, D.C., Jan. 29, 2004
"[T]he illiteracy level of our children are appalling."- Washington, D.C., Jan. 23, 2004

Well guys, dont get so horny about the US or Bush, cause there is a small percentage of people in America that actually runs literally the globe.
Their education system is propably not the best surely, but while they are so igorant in geography, they are at the same time very familiar in business and trade, something lacking from our Balkan mindsets.
You cant have it all, mostly developed nations train their youth according their needs.
The US doesnt need geographically familiar citizens as they do not have any geographical aspirations like the Balkan countries have, while they have economical aspirations to markets, economies and trade, and technology, hence their technological and economical institution are the best in the world.
Do not underestimate them.

Yes Tsunami you are right. They do train their youth according to their needs.Originally Posted by tsunami
But finding one's own coutry on a world map is not something you need training for, it's common knowledge, especially if we take into consideration the fact they the USA covers such a large portion of that map.

Speaking in tongues, weeping for salvation, praying for an end to abortion and worshipping a picture of President Bush — these are some of the activities at Pastor Becky Fischer's Bible camp in North Dakota, "Kids on Fire," subject of the provocative new documentary, "Jesus Camp."
